Abstract: Dance is often framed in the light of human perfection and athleticism. Yet, human motion exists within cycles of deterioration and rejuvenation. Injuries, although uninvited, can facilitate an unexpected intimacy with the body— moments of contemplation, observation, and re-creation. In these moments, we come to understand the mortal frailty of the body and the pressing hand of time. Yet, the tangible fray of sinews, muscles, and bones also reveals a paradoxical invincibility, for it is through the loss of once was that a new creative process can begin. By leaning into the humanness of decline, we find both the necessity and source of creative collaboration, and the courage to step into the shadows of the unknown.
